HERMANN VON HELMHOLTZ, EWALD HERING AND COLOR VISION: A CONTROVERSY OVER STYLES OF REASONING?

چکیده
During the second half of 19th century, in field physiological optics, there was a strong controversy between Hermann von Helmholtz and Ewald Hering. This has been usually characterized as “empiricism” vs. “nativism”. In physiology visual perception, several subjects demanded attention, among them, color vision. Hering suggested different theories for correlate sensation spaces to give an account relationships colors. this article, I will argue that two authors could be understood differences styles reasoning, these express presuppositions. More specifically, want suggest disagreements linked discussions on how vital phenomena should studied.

Hermann Ludwig Ferdinand von Helmholtz (1821-1894)
Driven by both empirical knowledge and mathematical reasoning, Helmholtz made extraordinary contributions to natural philosophy, including both imaging and vision science. Fundamentally important examples include the Helmholtz theorem and the Helmholtz equation, which describe vector and scalar properties of light fields. The first informs us that fields are derived from point and current sourc...
متن کاملHermann von Helmholtz ( 1821 - 1894 ) Notes for Multimedia Fluid Mechanics
The breadth of Helmholtz’s interests and contributions is outstanding. He is one of the rare scientists able to be creative in domains, as diverse as medicine, anatomy, physiology, acoustics, fluid mechanics, physics, music, aesthetics, epistemology... Although he was a universal mind, he insisted on his preference for physics, both theoretical and experimental. He was among the too rare scient...

Magda Whitrow emphasizes Wagner's other significant contribution to medicine. He discovered that cretinism was caused by malfunction of the thyroid gland. Why is he not given the credit for this discovery? Whitrow carefully shows that it was because Kocher, the man usually cited as the originator of this theory, published his version in a more prestigious journal. Indeed this raises the questio...
متن کاملNew ideas about binocular coordination of eye movements: is there a chameleon in the primate family tree?
Many animals with laterally placed eyes, such as chameleons, move their eyes independently of one another. In contrast, primates with frontally placed eyes and binocular vision must move them together so that both eyes are aimed at the same point in visual space. Is binocular coordination an innate feature of how our brains are wired, or have we simply learned to move our eyes together? This qu...
متن کاملThe Young-(Helmholtz)-Maxwell Theory of Color Vision
In the second volume of the Handbuch der physiologischen Optik, published in 1860, Helmholtz sets out a three-receptor theory of color vision using coterminal response curves, and shows that this theory can unify most phenomena of color mixing known at the time. Maxwell had publicized the same theory five years earlier, but Helmholtz barely acknowledges this fact in the Handbuch. Some historian...
